Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy

Caribbean poker is one of the more simple card games you can enjoy at a casino. You basically only have two or three choices to make during each game;

  • First you decide on how much you want to bet.
  • Then the dealer will deal you 5 cards and himself 5 cards - but flips only his first card face up.
  • You then decide whether you want to call or fold after seeing his one card.
Caribbean poker also typically offers a $1 side bet where you can bet to win a progressive pot (or a portion of it) if you are dealt certain hands. Not all online casinos offer a progressive jackpot - Microgaming's 'Cyberstud Poker' specifically has no progressive aspect.

Basic Strategy
Online caribbean poker strategy is very simple;

  • Remember that the dealer must get at least and Ace/King combination in order to qualify.
    If he doesn't qualify the dealer pays only 1 to 1 on any hand. So if you get 4 aces and the dealer doesn't qualify then your payout is only 1 to 1.
  • Always call if you are dealt a pair or better
    Remember, with no draws and 5 cards, a hand is hard to come by. This is almost a guaranteed win.
  • Usually fold if you are dealt anything less then an Ace/King combo
    Since high card only pays 1 to 1 anyway - why risk it? The lowest of pairs or an Ace/King from the dealer will cost you the game.

Progressive Jackpot Side Bets
Most online caribbean poker casinos offer a side bet of $1 on a progressive jackpot. These jackpots can get quite large, but don't pay out that often - requiring a royal flush to take the whole pot. Other hands can take partial amounts or pay off additional money, usually starting at a flush.

That said - a flush is not an easy hand to get in 5 card stud. Personally I do not think it's a wise choice to make this bet usually, since the house edge is about 25% - one of the worst bets in a casino. However - progressive jackpots can get very large - so that should be taken into consideration. If a progressive jackpot costs a $1 a hand but only pays $10,000, and the chance of getting a Royal dealt to you are 1 in 650,000 - it's far from a good bet. Were the jackpot $650,000 however - it would theoretically be an 'even' bet, and worth considering.

Asides from taking the jackpot value into consideration, there's really no strategy when it comes to progressive bets with caribbean stud poker - so play it if your feeling lucky, but I wouldn't recommend making it a part of every hand.
